多年生植物。茎直立，不分枝。基生叶常莲座状。花两性，微俯垂，单生、总状花序或圆锥花序；花萼钟形，常呈囊状，口张开，具10条紫色纵脉，脉弧形，顶端连合，脉间宽，膜质；雌雄蕊柄极短；花瓣内藏或露出花萼，紫色、红色或绿白色，爪具耳，瓣片微凹缺、2或4裂；副花冠明显；花柱5。蒴果基部常1室，10齿裂，稀5瓣裂；种子肾形，肥厚，表面具小瘤或短线条纹，脊圆钝或平，或种子压扁，平滑，脊具环翅。
我国产26种1亚种5变种。
